چکیده

In many important text classification problems, acquiring class labels for training documents is costly, while gathering large quantities of unlabeled data is cheap. This paper shows that the accuracy of text classifiers trained with a small number of labeled documents can be improved by augmenting this small training set with a large pool of unlabeled documents. We present a theoretical argument showing that, under common assumptions, unlabeled data contain information about the target function. We then introduce an algorithm for learning from labeled and unlabeled text based on the combination of Expectation-Maximization with a naive Bayes classifier. The algorithm first trains a classifter using the available labeled documents, and probabilistically labels the unlabeled documents; it then trains a new classifier using the labels for all the documents, and iterates to convergence. Experimental results, obtained using text from three different realworld tasks, show that the use of unlabeled data reduces classification error by up to 33%.

Learning to Classify Texts Using Positive and Unlabeled Data

In traditional text classification, a classifier is built using labeled training documents of every class. This paper studies a different problem. Given a set P of documents of a particular class (called positive class) and a set U of unlabeled documents that contains documents from class P and also other types of documents (called negative class documents), we want to build a classifier to cla...

Using EM to Classify Text from Labeled and Unlabeled Documents

This paper shows that the accuracy of learned text classifiers can be improved by augmenting a small number of labeled training documents with a large pool of unlabeled documents. This is significant because in many important text classification problems obtaining classification labels is expensive, while large quantities of unlabeled documents are readily available. We present a theoretical ar...

Bayesian Bridging Topic Models for Classification

We study the problem of constructing the topic-based model over different domains for text classification. In real-world applications, there are abundant unlabeled documents but sparse labeled documents. It is challenging to construct a reliable and adaptive model to classify a large amount of documents containing different domains. The classifiers trained from a source domain shall perform poo...

A Genetic Semi-supervised Fuzzy Clustering Approach to Text Classification

A genetic semi-supervised fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed, which can learn text classifier from labeled and unlabeled documents. Labeled documents are used to guide the evolution process of each chromosome, which is fuzzy partition on unlabeled documents. The fitness of each chromosome is evaluated with a combination of fuzzy within cluster variance of unlabeled documents and misclassifi...
